Ian Bishop concluded his career with the Algonquin Thunder men’s badminton team as one of the most accomplished athletes in OCAA badminton history. He captured three straight undefeated OCAA men’s singles championships from 1969-70 to 1971-72.
Ian regarded his first title as the most difficult, earned through an intense round-robin and playoff format. His third and final championship held special meaning, won in front of a hometown Ottawa crowd after several tightly contested matches.
Following his graduation, Ian returned to coach at Algonquin, guiding players to three additional individual OCAA titles. His passion for the sport remained strong, as he competed as an Ontario “A” player from 1976 onward, capturing multiple provincial and national Masters titles.
Beyond competition, Ian made significant contributions to the sport through leadership and volunteerism, serving as Vice President of Badminton Canada and President of the Ontario Badminton Association.
In recognition of his legacy, Ian Bishop was named to the OCAA Badminton All-Millennium Team.
