Year: 2023
Team: Women's Basketball

John MacInnis dedicated a decade to the Algonquin Thunder women’s basketball program, serving as both assistant and head coach over his tenure.

He joined the coaching staff as an assistant in 2005-06 and was promoted to head coach in 2008-09, a role he held for six seasons before returning for one final year as an assistant in 2014-15 to focus on his young family.

As head coach, MacInnis led Algonquin to unprecedented success, guiding the Thunder to a record-setting four consecutive OCAA women’s basketball championships from 2010-11 to 2013-14. His teams compiled an outstanding 84-12 overall record, including three undefeated regular seasons and only two regular-season losses over five years. Under his leadership, the Thunder captured four provincial gold medals, one silver, and two bronze.

MacInnis also coached the team to a national silver medal in 2010-11, matching the best finish ever by an OCAA program in women’s basketball at that time. He was named OCAA Coach of the Year in 2011-12 and mentored two CCAA All-Canadians: Jenny Duval (Allen) and Sandre Bascoe.

Today, John continues to share his passion for the game through coaching with the Ottawa Shooting Stars and officiating OCAA games, remaining an influential figure in the basketball community.
