Year: 2017

Ron Port began his career at the Ontario Vocational Centre on the Woodroffe Campus in 1965. When Algonquin College was formed in 1967 through the merger of the Vocational Centre and the Eastern Ontario Institute of Technology, Ron continued his work with the newly established college.

He taught in the Physical Education Department, coached the men’s hockey team for 12 years, and managed the campus intramural program. He also spent several years coaching both the badminton and curling teams.

In 1967, Ron attended the first OCAA Annual General Meeting as the Eastern Division Convenor for men’s hockey, a role he held for eight years before serving an additional two years as the Senior Convenor.

Ron became the Athletic Director of the Algonquin College Students' Association in 1984. During his tenure, the gymnasium at the Woodroffe Campus was renovated, a 20,000-square-foot fitness centre was built, and the college installed Canada’s first artificial turf soccer pitch with a removable dome at a community college.

Under his leadership, Algonquin hosted numerous OCAA provincial championships in both men’s and women’s basketball and soccer. He also served as the East regional representative on several OCAA committees, including Constitution, Eligibility, and Awards, and chaired the Ways and Means Committee for two years. From 1995 to 2001, he held roles on the OCAA Executive Committee as President Elect, President, and Past President, and represented the association at the CCAA AGM throughout that time.

In recognition of his contributions to amateur sport, Ron received the City of Ottawa’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014. That same year, after 49 years of service, he retired from the Students' Association at Algonquin College.
