WOMEN'S BASKETBALL EARN OPENING NIGHT WIN

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL EARN OPENING NIGHT WIN

Our women's basketball team kicked off the 2025-26 season at home on October 31st against the Durham Lords.  The Lords opened their season a week prior with a 62-36 loss to the Seneca Sting.  After graduating 10 seniors in 2024-25, Wolves fans had their 1st chance to watch this year's squad that looks much different than years prior.

After the departure of 3 time All-Canadian point guard Dasia McDonald, the Wolves were happy to add 5th year transfer guard Taryn Mitchell who played the previous 4 years at Niagara College.  Mitchell made an immediate impact assisting on the 1st Wolves basket of the year, a 3 point shot from the top of the arc by 3rd year guard Leah Hirst.  The 1st quarter was evenly played with the Wolves taking a 16-13 advantage into the quarter break.

Algonquin stepped it up on the defensive end in the 2nd quarter holding Durham to just 7 points on 21.3% from the floor.  The 2nd was also the Wolves best offensive quarter putting up 21 points while shooting 38.9% from the floor and 33.3% from beyond the arc.  Taryn Mitchell led the way offensively scoring 8 of her 10 1st half points including 3's on back to back scoring possessions.  The Wolves took a 16 point lead into the locker room.

The Lords were not able to cut into the Algonquin lead and the Wolves cruised to an eventual 61-44 win.  3rd year guard Cooper Drover led the way with 15 points, all from behind the arc.  She shot an impressive 5 for 8 from deep.  Taryn Mitchell wasn't far behind with 14 points.  The veteran also added 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

The Wolves are back in action on Friday November 7th on the road at St. Lawrence College in Kingston Ontario.  They will tip-off at 6:00 pm.  The next chance to catch them at home is Saturday November 15th at 1:00 pm against the Georgian Grizzlies for the 2nd Feed the Pack game of the season.  All proceeds from the game will go to support the SA Food Cupboard.  The SA will also be accepting non-perishable food donations at the door.  Thank you in advance for your support!
