WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WEEKEND SPLIT ENDS STREAK OF 50 STRAIGHT REGULAR SEASON WINS

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WEEKEND SPLIT ENDS STREAK OF 50 STRAIGHT REGULAR SEASON WINS

November 7th @ St. Lawrence

The Wolves women's basketball team hit the road for the 1st time this season to take on the St. Lawrence Surge on Friday and the Loyalist Lancers on Saturday.  The Wolves entered the weekend with a 1-0 record after taking down Durham at home the week prior.  As for St. Lawrence, they were still looking for their 1st win after back to back road losses against Seneca and Georgian.

The Wolves came out firing in the 1st quarter, ending the frame with a 30-10 lead while shooting an impressive 9 for 9 from the charity stripe.  Algonquin would not look back from there on route to a dominant 87-45 win to improve to 2-0.  5th year guard Cianah Miller led the way offensively scoring a season high in points while collecting 6 rebounds and 3 assists.  Fellow 5th year Taryn Mitchell was also in double figures with 16 points and 6 boards.

November 8th @ Loyalist

On Saturday, the Wolves would face their toughest test yet in Belleville against the Loyalist Lancers.  The Lancers entered the game with a 2-0 record after back to back road wins to start the season.  Loyalist is never an easy place to play and Saturday was no exception.

The 1st quarter was evenly matched.  Taryn Mitchell dumped a ball off to Chloe Coggin who opened the scoring on the 1st possession.  Algonquin was able to open up an 8 point advantage, but Loyalist cut the lead to 3 at the end of the period.  The 2nd quarter belonged to the Lancers.  Loyalist opened the quarter on a 20-0 run to open up a 17 point lead with 3 minutes left in the quarter.  Algonquin was able to weather the storm to decrease the deficit to 12 going into the half.

The 3rd quarter was evenly played with Loyalist managing to maintain their 12 point lead.  Unfortunately for the Wolves, they would not get any closer, shooting just 13.3 % in the final period to fall 71-51.  Taryn Mitchell was once again a bright spot with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals.

The loss ends a run of 50 straight OCAA East regular season wins for the Algonquin Wolves women's basketball program dating back to February 12th 2022.  To put things into perspective, at the time the Jack Doyle Athletics & Recreation had just opened, the OCAA was not allowing fans in the stands due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the Iphone 14 had just been released and Tom Brady had recently announced his retirement.

The Wolves are back at home on Saturday November 15th at 1:00 pm when they take on the Georgian Grizzlies for our 2nd annual Pots and Pans Night.  It is also the 2nd Feed the Pack game of the 2025-26 varsity season.  All proceeds from the game will go to support the SA Food Cupboard.  The ARC will also be accepting non-perishable food donations.  Thank you in advance for your generosity.
