WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FINISH OFF 1ST SEMESTER WITH A CLOSE LOSS TO SENECA

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FINISH OFF 1ST SEMESTER WITH A CLOSE LOSS TO SENECA

The Wolves women's basketball team closed out the 1st half of their season on home court on Friday November 28th when they welcomed the Seneca Sting to the Jack Doyle Athletics & Recreation Centre.  It was a special night with the team hosting their 3rd annual Shoot for the Cure game in support of Breast Cancer Canada.

Algonquin entered the contest with a 4-3 record after pulling off an overtime win at Centennial the weekend prior.  Seneca held a 5-1 record with their only loss coming at the hands of undefeated Loyalist.

The rookies got the Wolves off to a strong start.  Ayslin Stevenson knocked down a 3 from the top of the arc to open up the scoring, followed by a Chloe Coggin jumper from the foul line to give the Wolves a 5-0 lead.  Seneca settled in from there and started to control the pace leading to an 18-12 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.  The 2nd quarter was back and forth with the Sting gaining a 1 point edge leading to a 34-27 lead at the half.

The Wolves put together a strong 3rd quarter, holding Seneca to just 21.1% shooting.  They outscored the Sting 15-9 in the quarter to narrow the gap to 1, setting up an exciting 4th.  The momentum went back and forth with 4 lead changes in the early going.  Seneca was able to find some separation with 2:28 to go.  The Wolves picked up the pressure defensively which fueled a run to narrow the gap to 2 points with 30 seconds to go.  Unfortunately that is as close as they would get as Seneca managed to ice the game at the foul line leading to a 57-52 win.

A tough night at the charity stripe proved costly for the Wolves.  Despite the loss, Taryn Mitchell had another strong performance with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists.  Cianah Miller was also in double figures with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

On a more positive note, Shoot for the Cure was once again a big success.  The final amount raised is still being calculated.  Make sure to keep an eye on AlgonquinWolves.com for updates.  A huge thank you to all who donated to the cause!

The Wolves will be back in action in the new year.  They will kick-off the 2nd semester at home on Saturday January 17th at 6:00 pm against the George Brown Huskies.
