ALGONQUIN WOLVES WOMEN’S RUGBY 7s BATTLE THROUGH SECOND TOURNAMENT IN OSHAWA

ALGONQUIN WOLVES WOMEN’S RUGBY 7s BATTLE THROUGH SECOND TOURNAMENT IN OSHAWA

The Algonquin Wolves Women's Rugby 7s team endured a challenging weekend in their second OCAA tournament of the season. The Wolves opened against the undefeated Humber Hawks, the same squad that ended Algonquin's medal hopes last season. Despite a strong defensive effort, the Wolves struggled to generate offense until late in the match when Ruby Mudekereza scored a try in the dying minutes. Humber ultimately prevailed 20-7. In their second match against the Conestoga Condors, Algonquin fell behind 17-0 by halftime. The Wolves came out energized after the break, with Faiza Faucher-Ahmed scoring to cut the deficit to 17-5. However, a late Condors try sealed a 22-5 defeat for the Wolves.

Looking to rebound, the Wolves opened Sunday's play with a convincing 12-0 victory over the Fleming Phoenix. Grace Pershick broke through early with a long run for Algonquin's opening try, while Mudekereza added another with by  powering through the Fleming defense. Tegan Egli converted successfully to cap off the win. The final match of the tournament pitted the Wolves against the Seneca Sting. After conceding an early try, Algonquin tightened their defense and kept the deficit close. The Sting extended their lead to 10-0 early in the second half, but a momentum-shifting tackle by Faucher-Ahmed set up Angela Hill, who ran in a try to make it 10-5. Despite a hard-fought finish, the Wolves were unable to find the equalizer, falling narrowly 10-5.

The Wolves now sit at 2-5 on the season, currently sixth in the OCAA standings. They will regroup with a week off before heading to Toronto for their third tournament of the season on October 4–5.
