The men's volleyball team completed the 1st half of their regular season with a win in 4 sets over the Centennial Colts. The Wolves improved their regular season record to 7-3 going into the break. Let's take a look back on the semester that was.
The Wolves started off the OCAA season with 5 straight road games. Despite being away from home, they got off to a hot start knocking off Durham, Loyalist and La Cité in the month of October. The beginning of November was less kind to Algonquin as they dropped back to back games 3-0 at Seneca and Georgian. Wolves fans finally got the chance to see their team play at home the following weekend, and the boys did not disappoint. They took down Durham on Friday and George Brown on Saturday in straight sets. The Wolves remain undefeated in the friendly confines of the Jack Doyle Athletics and Recreation Centre. They will take their 7-3 regular season record into the break. The team currently sits in 3rd place in the OCAA East division standings and 7th in the OCAA overall rankings.
The Wolves have benefited from large contributions from veteran players so far this season.
3rd year middle Pras Jeyapalasingham has been averaging 3 points per set on an impressive 0.88 blocks and 1.82 kills. He has been a beast for the Wolves and has given the fans some exciting plays to cheer about.
4th year outside Jeff Commerford has been a consistent force for Algonquin. He is averaging 2.9 points per set on 2.31 kills, 0.46 aces and 0.11 blocks. The Peterborough native had one of his best games against his former team, the Fleming Knights when he finished with 15 kills and 7 digs.
2nd year middle Connor Finnie has put together an impressive sophomore campaign. He is averaging 2.4 points per set on 1.38 kills and 0.79 blocks. Finnie has used his 6'7 frame and his athleticism to his advantage.
The team has put themselves into a good position going into the 2nd half of the year. They will look to keep the ball rolling in the right direction with hopes of hosting a cross-over game in late February to qualify for the OCAA Final 8 hosted by Fanshawe College from February 22nd to 24th.
Algonquin will be back in action on January 14th in Peterborough for a date with the Fleming Knights. You can catch them at home as early as January 20th when they host the Seneca Sting at 8:00 PM.
Make sure you come out to the Jack Doyle Athletics and Recreation Centre this winter to cheer on your Wolves!
