MEN'S BASKETBALL CLOSE OUT 1ST SEMESTER WITH CONVINCING HOME WIN

The 1st half of the Wolves men's basketball season came to a close on Friday November 28th when the Seneca Sting visited the Jack Doyle Athletics and Recreation Centre.  After a tough start to the season, Algonquin has been showing positive signs as of late and were hoping to finish the semester on a high note.  The Sting entered the contest with a 4-3 record and in the middle of the pack of the OCAA East standings.

The 1st quarter was tightly contested, with the Wolves able to gain a 1 point lead going into the 2nd.  The Wolves were able to put together an 11-0 run at the end of the 2nd quarter to give them a 40-31 lead going into the break.

Algonquin put together another strong quarter in the 3rd allowing them to double the lead going into the final frame.  Despite taking their foot off the gas a bit in the 4th, the Wolves were able to hang on for a convincing 76-64 home win.

This was a strong team win with many contributions up and down the lineup.  Albert Opena led the team in scoring with 15 points and 6 assists.  Haven Holder had an 11 point and 12 rebound double double, including 2 impressive dunks.  Gezim Pjetergjokaj had a perfect shooting day scoring 10 points on 2/2 from the field and 6/6 from the line.  Shyeem Brown also contributed 10 points on an efficient shooting night.  Last but not least, newcomer Frank Thomas finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals in 31 minutes off the bench.  Thomas has had a huge impact since joining the roster down the stretch of the season.

The Wolves earned their 3rd win of the season and their 2nd in 3 games.  They are hoping to carry this momentum into the 2nd half of the season and climb their way up the OCAA East standings.  The team will be back to OCAA action on Wednesday January 14th at 7:00 pm against crosstown rival La Cité.
