Ottawa, Ont - The Algonquin Wolves men's volleyball team took down their cross-town rival, the La Cité Coyotes, on Wednesday night, remaining undefeated in 2026 with a 3–1 victory.
Algonquin got off to a shaky start, as La Cité edged out a tightly contested first set, 28–26. The Wolves responded quickly, jumping out to an 8–2 lead in the second set, capped off by a Derek Webster ace. Algonquin kept their foot on the gas, extending the lead to 15–4 after a big right-side kill from Nick Barber. One of the top defensive teams in the OCAA this season, the Wolves put that on full display as the Coyotes struggled to find clean points, allowing Algonquin to cruise to a 25–12 second-set win.
The third set followed a similar script. A big serving run from Julien Tran pushed the Wolves' lead to 18–8. Another ace from Webster gave Algonquin set point shortly after, and a service error from the Coyotes sealed a 25–14 set win for the Wolves.
La Cité showed plenty of fight in the fourth set, keeping things close early. Algonquin gained some separation after a pair of kills from Barber and Webster to take a 10–7 lead. The Wolves then capitalized on a stretch of Coyotes hitting errors to build a five-point advantage. From there, Algonquin sided out consistently and closed out the set 25–20 to secure the 3–1 victory and improve to 8–3 on the season.
Several Wolves turned in strong performances on the stat sheet:
-
Derek Webster led all players with 16 kills, adding 5 aces and 1 block for 22 points
-
Nick Barber finished with 12 kills and 1 block
-
Julien Tran contributed 8 kills and 2 aces
-
